Lessons are 45-minutes or 60-minutes. Students have the happy opportunity of playing on a newly rebuilt Steinway grand piano in a peaceful, lovely room separated from my home living quarters.
Each lesson includes: a "check-in" with posture and breathing, a warmup with comfortable pieces or exercises, and then detailed work on individual pieces of repertoire or studies that have been chosen for the individual student's interests and needs. We do sight-playing because it helps to learn music quicker. And we study music theory and music history as a natural outgrowth of the desire to understand how to bring a piece of music to life.
I play for my students often. In the modern world, most of us just don't get to hear live music very often. My students say that this is the favorite part of their lessons. They learn by hearing and they are nurtured by it as well.
I try to give each student a chance to make at least one "magical" moment at each lesson. If you experience magic making music, you'll want to do it more and more often!
